HOW TO DEAL WITH STUBBORN STUDENT AS A TEACHER

A teacher is faced with several taxing duties such as meeting up with curriculum deadlines, ensuring that every student learns to the best of his/her ability and many other responsibilities.

However, this is not all to a teacher’s taxing duty; many times the teacher has to deal with students of several character differences. Certain students are easy to instruct while others extremely strong willed. Having a class of strong willed students can be frustrating for teachers.

If you have such a student in your class, here is what to do to manage their excesses.

Give them leadership positions in projects: some students are only stubborn when they run on solitary grounds. When the class is partitioned into project groups, give such students controlled leadership positions where responsibility is handed over them.

Become a friend: some strong willed students are softened by friendship. They may be stubborn from the absence of care from home. Providing support and care can cause a change in character.

Encourage them in their strengths: rebellion will increase as long as the only treatment given is reprimand. If there are areas of strength the student has, praise and support such students in those areas. It could be creative arts or athletics, when they are appreciated; a sense of purpose does well to curb some character default.

Reprimand and counsel are a teacher’s first approach to addressing stubborn students but they don’t always solve the problem. Using the strategies mentioned above, you have a high chance of managing such students.
