HOW TO STOP YOUR TEACHING STAFF FROM LEAVING DESPITE DELAY IN SALARIES

You will agree with me that running a school as a business comes with its highs and lows. From settling state education board criteria to handling teacher productivity to dealing with students who default in school fee payment.

It takes persistence, strategy, and a lot of financial investment to keep a school running. However, another event that characterizes private schools is the rather quick exodus of teachers in the event of a slight delay in salaries.

This makes the teaching staff of such schools unstable hence discouraging parents from committing their wards into the school. This goes a long way to affect the population of enrolled students and consequently the expected income of the school.

In some cases, these events of delay in payment of salaries are out of uncontrollable forces and the board has less or no control over them such as a lot of students defaulting on school fees which is the school’s major source of income.

Whatever the case may be, at certain times, payment of salaries may delay and if not handled properly, you may lose a bulk of your best teaching staff.

However, a good rapport between the management board and the teachers before such events would build loyalty in the mind of the teachers. In such times, loyalty would become the most needed resource.

Schools with the dictatorial and feudal system of administration are worst hit during such period because the only factor keeping its staff (money) is out of the game at that time so teachers are forced to find other jobs even if they pay lesser than the former school.

To guard against such exodus, ensure that there is a working relationship between the leadership of the school or the school management board and the teachers before such times.

Also, such times are best managed with an efficient flow of information. When teachers are aware of why their salaries are being delayed and how the management board is working to resolve it, they are motivated to be patient with the school.

What ends great enterprises isn’t always the challenge but the management of it. Managing the exodus of teachers in the face of delay in payment of salary is a pivotal skill necessary for every private school to understand and master.
