Three areas to research when applying to a new school
Three areas to research when applying to a new school
Teachers want higher pay, cheaper cost, certified, qualitative experience, job security, and so many other benefits so they will always have to seek better opportunities with notable schools in the industry. Since money is a major factor that influences the desire of many teachers to apply to these schools, most of them do not do a proper check before considering such institutions. They only realize how important other aspects of their job are after they secure the opportunity. It is good to follow schools of interest on social media even before applying or talk to ex-teachers and current teachers in their school. However, the main concern is, what questions should be asked and what answers should be focused on when researching about a new school for employment.
Here are three aspects of a school other than money that every teacher should consider applying.
Work time
Do not be fooled by the work time on a website, which is usually for students and prospective parents. The two-hour rule is to add 120 minutes to a school’s official closing time as a prediction for the closing time for staff. Except, you do not intend to have a side hustle or place a high level of importance on family time or rest, then closing time is something to consider as a teacher. Some schools are bent on slashing holidays for teachers or including weekends regularly as workdays so if this does not sit well with you then no matter how high you are paid, your job satisfaction would below.
Extracurricular and event
Some schools place a huge priority on extracurricular activities and events such that they are seen as the niche of the school like local and international competitions, conferences, sports tournaments, etc. Considering the aspect of time once again, such activities would demand more hours outside the classroom and what is even more important is that your job efficiency and safety might depend on the outcomes of those events. It is not like those events are bad but it is better to be aware and ready to be committed to such responsibilities before joining the team.
Faith and vision
Sometimes, this can be easily detected by just simply comprehending the mission statement of the school or by observing the content of the school on social media. Being a Christian or Muslim is not enough if the school holds some doctrines as dear in words and practice. Ensure that your vision and faith matches that of the school before applying.
